13. Arie Wilhelmus SCHARFF II ⁽¹⁾ (photo) was born on Feb 8 1844 in Schaarloos (now Charlois), IJselmonde, Netherlands. He immigrated on Mar 10 1856 to Pella, Marion County, Iowa, USA. He Cit Issued ticket for Smoking Pipe with illegal cap on Feb 5 1870. He was buried in 1902 in New Sharon, Mahaska County, Iowa, USA. He died on Dec 12 1902 in Madison Twp, Hancock County, Iowa, USA. He was a Farmer in Pella, Marion County, Iowa, USA. Arie immigrated in 1856 at 12 years old with father and mot her from Holland. See Souvenir History of Pella, page 97 . He left Charlois with parents March 10, 1856. He becam e a citizen Feb. 5, 1870.

He was married to Hendrikja Petenella "Henrietta" JELSMA (daughter of Egbert Jelles JELSMA and Evertje Gerrits KLEIN) on Dec 16 1868 in Pella, Marion County, Iowa, USA.⁽⁷⁾ Hendrikja Petenella "Henrietta" JELSMA ⁽¹⁾ (photo) was born on Nov 24 1851 in Pella, Marion County, Iowa, USA. She died on Feb 24 1932 in Oskaloosa, Mahaska County, Iowa, USA. She was buried on Feb 26 1932 in New Sharon, Mahaska County, Iowa, USA. cemetery on Hwy e/w of town
She was. She Name Sake Petenilla because parents wanted boy. BIO:Hendrikja was given the middle name of Petenella becaus e her parents
wanted a boy as their first child. She hated the name an d would not
use it. Her daughter Dena was given the middle name of Egb ert after
her grandfather. She too hated the name and refused to us e it.

Biography from Gladys Meyers:
Henrietta was a beautiful seamstress and also knitter, coul d look at something an go home and make it. She was very n eat about her appearance, hair, etc. When she was a youn g girl, since she was the oldesst child she would have to s it on the back of the planter and drop corn all day.

She did not go beyond first grade but she could read and wr ite both english and dutch. In later years, she lived wit h her son Ed. In those days older people had no income . In the summer she would spend a few weeks with her othe r children. Gladys says I can remeber she was always bus y doing something when she was at our house. When she wa s in her 70's she made each of her children a little foot s tool. Arie Wilhelmus SCHARFF II and Hendrikja Petenella "Henrietta" JELSMA had the following children:
